A Greener NZ?

New Zealand is well known internationally for being a clean, green country full of hobbits and picture perfect vistas. Not entirely all factual but when something sticks it sticks. Further to these assumptions NZ is home to a HUGE range of endemic flora and fauna (plants and animals). However....the rise of people and 'concrete jungles' means that our flora and fauna are struggling a little bit. Green spaces in urban centres are becoming less diverse and increasingly exotic. Diversity (especially of the native variety) is key to preserving species, protecting taonga species and encouraging future conservation ambassadors. Young children are commonly visual and tactile learners; which means they need to have physical and visual interaction with the environment to really learn about it. All of which can happen in primary schools! First of its kind in Aotearoa this research hopes to better learning opportunities for children in schools whilst also positively contributing to the urban biodiversity matrix.

Stay tuned for updates and progress...in the meantime continue to complete and share the survey within your networks. Back into Term 3 teachers might be in need of a break or something fun to complete with their class this week!

As always,

Arohanui
